There is a virtue for each month and if a student was seen expressing the virtue their name was read over the intercom and they received a sticker with their name on the wall. They also got a prize at the end of the month if they did it. Teachers got involved by recognizing positive behavior in students who aren’t normally well behaved.
PRO:
- Focuses on positive behaviors, instead of negative ones
- Sets goals of good behaviors each month
- Prizes and motivation are easy to change when student interest changes
CON:
- Ignores negative behaviors
- Could make other students feel bad about themselves if they are not recogniced
- Some students may end up getting made fun of because his or her name was not announced
- May become repetitive and kids may lose interest
- Narrow focus. Only one positive behavior is being recognized each month
Ratings for Expressing a Monthly Virtue:
- Reduce public humiliation: Students will be praised for their behavior rather than humiliated. Their name will be announced for a positive action unlike some other strategies where negative behavior is announced...one star
- Effectiveness: This strategy will be as effective as the teacher makes it. The teacher will need to keep the motivation factor up and keep the kids engaged and interested. He or she will also have to stay consistent with the recognition. If the teacher forgets to recognize someone, that child may stop trying. For the most part, kids will be encouraged to behave well so they can hear their names called and receive a price...half star
- Student acceptance: This will depend on the individual student. Nothing happens if the student does not perform the virtue so some students may not participate at all...half star
- Minimal Class Disruption: This strategy does not disrupt the classroom. Recognitions are done over the announcements which take place every day before and after the school day. No lessons will need to be stopped for this strategy...one star
